Abhilash Tomy, a renowned ocean sailor from India, has become a symbol of resilience and determination. In an awe-inspiring feat, he embarked on a solo journey around the world from November 2012 to March 2013, braving the vast oceans without any stops in his 56-foot sailboat. As his 151-day solitary voyage reached its conclusion in Mumbai, he was received with admiration by the Hon’ble President of India.

Fueled by his relentless spirit, Abhilash decided to participate in the Golden Globe Race 2018. This race encompassed a gruelling 30,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe on classic long keel boats, where sailors were strictly forbidden from using any technology developed after 1968.

However, fate had a different plan for Abhilash. After 82 days of racing, he encountered a violent storm in the middle of the vast southern Indian Ocean. In a devastating accident, his spine was fractured, leaving him disabled. This incident triggered a massive international rescue effort involving four nations, showcasing the immense scale of human compassion. Following a successful spine stabilization surgery and months of therapy, Abhilash embarked on his road to recovery, resuming his beloved pursuits of flying and sailing.

Four years later, Abhilash returned to the very race that had nearly claimed his life. A testament to his indomitable spirit, he sailed alone around the world for a staggering 236 days . During the  Golden Globe Race 2022, Abhilash’s was the most repaired boat in the race. He eventually sailed to a second-position finish.

It is worth noting that only nine individuals had ever completed this challenging race in its 50-year history.

Through his endeavours, Abhilash embodies the triumph of the human spirit and continues to motivate others to overcome their own challenges and conquer new horizons.
